Our consultants, emergency clinicians, research managers, delivery staff and PhD students work together to design, run and share research that improves care for children.

Principal Investigators

Prof Dan Perry
Dan is an NIHR Research Professor and Professor of Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery at Alder Hey. He leads a large portfolio of national and international clinical research related to paediatric orthopaedic surgery and emergency care - mainly randomised clinical trials and the application of AI in imaging.

Dr Shrouk Messahel
Shrouk is a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. She is an NIHR NWC Research Scholar, Shrouk leads the development and delivery of research in the Paediatric Emergency Department, both through ED generated projects and collaboration with other specialties.

Mr Nick Peterson
Nick is a consultant in children’s and adult limb reconstruction surgery, working at both Alder Hey Hospital and Liverpool University Foundation Trust. He is the chief investigator on the NIHR funded ODD socks study.
Trial management & delivery

Lucy Cooper
Lucy is a Senior Programme Manager overseeing the SECTOR group. Lucy brings a background is in both qualitative research and NHS R&D, providing research expertise to catalyse the growth and development research portfolio.

Richard Kirk
Rich is a Senior Research Co-ordinator. He is primarily responsible for ensuring the research portfolio is supported and delivered in compliance with regulations. He co-ordinates the SMARTIE Study, an observational cohort study of routinely collected data.

Rusul Yonis
Rusul is an enthusiastic Clinical Research Fellow dedicated to enhancing patient care through research. Rusul is keen to make a meaningful impact in healthcare through rigorous research.

Natalie Copeland
Natalie is an Orthopedic and Spinal research practitioner at Alder Hey. Natalie is the face and the enthusiasm leading recruitment to the Trauma and Orthopaedic research portfolio at Alder Hey.
PhD Students

Abhinav Singh
Abhinav is an Orthopaedic Registrar on the North West Thames rotation and a PhD Student. His research, funded by the NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship, focuses on optimising newborn screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH).

Joanna Craven
Joanna is an Orthopaedic Registrar on the Wales rotation and a PhD student. Her research, funded by the NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship, focuses on optimising the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in newborns using the Smart4NIPE system.

Adam Galloway
Adam is an Academic Physiotherapist in Leeds. His research, funded by a NIHR Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship, focused on optimising and developing a set of guidelines for the non-operative care of children with Perthes’ Disease.

Allison Clement
Allie is a computer scientist in Oxford and a PhD student. Originally from Toronto, Canada, Allie moved to the UK to pursue a higher degree in Machine Vision. Her research focuses on fusing imaging data with metadata to improve the predictions in image analysis.
